I enjoyed A Mango-Shaped Space by the author Wendy Mass. It is about a girl named Mia Winchell who sees colors in letters and numbers and when she hears sounds. This mental disorder is called Synesthesia. Each number and letter has its own color. She has a cat named Mango who wheezes and the wheezes color is mango, and a brother named Zack who keeps track of the number of times he eats a McDonalds hamburger but despite his oddness he is very smart. She also has a sister Beth who changes the type and color of her hair almost every week and may or may not be a witch due to her botany habit.
When Mia was in third grade, her teacher called her up to do a problem on the board. When at the board, Mia saw the different colors of chalk that coincidentally matched her vision of the numbers colors. She wrote the numbers as she saw them in her "correct" colors. The teacher asked her what she was doing and when Mia answered she said she was using the right colors. The class began to whisper "freak".
This was a big deal and her parents were called in and she was very embarrassed. She decided to keep her synesthesia a secret, but that would all change in eighth grade.
Finally, when she is thirteen, she is failing math. She told her parents the truth about her Synesthesia that was causing her to fail in algebra. She ended up going to a neurologist who correctly diagnosed her. She learned about a website where she could meet other children and adults with the same problem.
Later on her cat and companion died after Mia forgot to give him his medicine. She briefly lost her Synesthesia and when she regained it she had a new out look on her Synesthesia and life.
